Confused names of one or several JG 2 pilot(s)

In 2nd TAF vol 2 by Shores, two Mustang of 268 Sqn are being listed by Fw Siegfried and Uffz Diekert of 1./JG 2.

But in Tony Wood claimlist, the second pilot is listed as Uffz Wilhlem Peukert.

In the same lists Uffz Diekert of 1./JG 2 is listed twice: for a claim on 6 Sep 43 as Klaus Diekert and on another claim on 18 March 44 as Herbert Diekert.

The JG 2 loss list has an Uffz Herbert Diekert of 1./JG 2 KIA on 13 May 1944, and this is confirmed by the Volskbund website. There is no Peukert listed in either of these two sources.

As Diekert is not a widely used family name, I'm quite sure that the claimant on 6 Sep 43 had the wrong name, and is the same Herbert as on 18 March, and it is probable that the claimant on 26 Sep 43 is also the same man.

Maybe someone may confirm that ? Thanks in advance

Laurent

Laurent,
There was an Ofw. Wilhelm Peukert of 6./JG 26 KIA at Dinant (B) on 44-02-04

In Prien et al. Die Jagdfliegerverbände der Luftwaffe Teil 10/IV the Mustang claims on 26.09.43 are listed as made by Fw. Siegfried Lemke
(8.) and Uffz. Heinrich Gawenat (1.)

In the same volume is listed a claim by an Ofw. Peukert (no first name) of 7./JG 2 for a B-17 on 29.05.43 at 16.10 hours.

Regards,
Tom

Re: Confused names of one or several JG 2 pilot(s)

Hi

I had identified these claims on 6th Sep 43 and 18th Mar 44 as Herbert Diekert from the Micro Films(totally independantly), probably I got the surname from the Micro Films and forname from a loss list!

The Micro Films often give rank and surname only!!
Regards

Johannes

Re: Confused names of one or several JG 2 pilot(s)

Bonjour,
I also noticed great differences between the list of Tony Wood and volume X of M.Prien.
For example, here same victories, but given to different pilots:
03/01/1943 :
Uffz. Wolfgang Ortlepp (7./JG2), 11h34, B-17, (Tony Wood)
Uffz. Wolfgang Galiga (7./JG2), 11h34, B-17, (Jagfliegerverbande)

Lt.Hans Pelzl (9./JG2), 11h47, B-17, (Tony Wood)
Lt.Friedrich Potzler (9./JG2), 11h47, B-17, (Jagfliegerverbande)

29/01/1943:
Fw.Rudolf Eisele (8./JG2), 14h29, Spitfire, (Tony Wood)
Lt.Wilhelm Godt (8./JG2), 14h29, Spitfire, (Jagfliegerverbande)

And there are tens of case like those there.
Why such differences?
Fredo

Re: Confused names of one or several JG 2 pilot(s)

Ouch, that is a thread resurrected from the dead !!

Thanks for the people who replied to it.

As for the discrepencies between Tony Wood lists and Prien books, there are several explanations, but the simplest way to say that is that Tony was the first to tackle it, was more or less alone, and most important, was using a source that was not 100% readable and that lists only family names. So some of the names were just guesses by Tony. At the time I and others sent him mails to correct or complete names as we were able to use other sources.

Then Mr Prien and co work is now using far more sources, and able to decypher more names by using other reports and so on.

On the other hand, when you compare a free Internet ressource and a rather expensive series of books, one may think that the second will be more reliable. And it is.

Re: Confused names of one or several JG 2 pilot(s)

Given that the names in the Prien group's work are based on the work of Hans Ring and Winifried Bock, one or both of whom are part of that group, and both of whom are/were the 'official' historians of the Lw Fighter Pilot's Association or whatever it's called, the data from those works should probably be considered the authority in these matters. The surviving Lw records, Gen.Qu. and whatever, are replete with errors in the spelling of names, locations, transposition of digits in WNr. and map co-ordinates, etc. Tony's groundbreaking research into Lw claims would certainly be subject to the same problem - the data he transcribed is only as good as originally recorded.

Re: Confused names of one or several JG 2 pilot(s)

Thank you for your answers.
I am just surprised that the list seen in Jagdfliegerverbande 10/IV, although I guess an enormous work of M.Prien and his team, we find:
- “New” pilots ever seen before (like Uffz. Wolfgang Galiga or Friedrich Potzler)
- Victories given to others pilot (like Fw.Eisele and Lt.Godt)
What do not reassure me, it’s still small errors, however easy to avoid I think. For example, 2 victories given 14 July 1943 to Obfw Horst Bigge of the 2. /JG2, whereas it is about Obfw. Josef Bigge, however written well for his victory the 15 august 1943.
Another example, the 06 September 1943, 2 victories given to Lt. Fuchs of the 1. /JG2: one is fore-mentioned Kurt and the other is fore-mentioned Karl, but in fact, it’s the same pilot: Lt. Paul Fuchs.
I do not criticize; I find right damage that the reader must still remain careful.
Fredo
