Re: TBF Avenger of VT-10 damaged by F6F
Brian,
Sorry about that. It was a typo on my part, now corrected. His name is in fact Outlaw. He eventually made Rear Admiral, and died in 1996. Enjoy! Frank.

Re: TBF Avenger of VT-10 damaged by F6F
Thanks Frank
Was Outlaw an ace when he engaged the Avenger? Cheers Brian PS: I have just Googled and found an entry for him. On 29/4/44 he led eight Hellcats against 36 Zeros, of which 22 destroyed and eight probables were claimed! Five and one probable by LtCdr Outlaw!! How do these claims stand up against Japanese losses? |

Re: TBF Avenger of VT-10 damaged by F6F
Brian,
As you noted, he claimed 5/1/0 on April 29, 1944 at 0750 at Truk, and a sixth on June 11, 1944 at Saipan. I have no idea how well these claims match Japanese losses. You could check the original edition, from USNI, of Hata and Izawa's book on Japanese Naval Units and Aces; or wait for the second edition coming soon from Grub Street. Enjoy! Frank.

Re: TBF Avenger of VT-10 damaged by F6F
Frank,
My information about Outlaw comes from another VF32 pilot, Richard May, who mentions it in his book "Hell Above", published 2004.

Re: TBF Avenger of VT-10 damaged by F6F
George,
Thanks for the information. I will have to check with Dick when I get a chance, and also fish out his book (which I saw recently here someplace, really I did!). Also have to check the VT-10 records when I get to them. Enjoy! Frank.

Re: TBF Avenger of VT-10 damaged by F6F
Eddie Outlaw was a controversial character--not loved by his squadron but he stood up for the troops while running TF-77 in the Tonkin Gulf c. 1966. After the Chinese began harassing USN aircraft he authorized a couple of fighter sweeps over Hainan, and things settled down for awhile.
