AL Fox, 249 Sqn

I'm after any details re a claim by F/O Arthur Leonard Fox (Aus15727). His service file, under 'Extracts Flying Log Book', indicates he was credited with an e/a destroyed during his tour with 249 Sqn. His first sortie was on 3/12/43, as a F/S, and last sortie 9/12/44, by which time he was commissioned.

Cheers,

Bruce

Re: AL Fox, 249 Sqn

Hi Bruce,

249 at War by Brian Cull includes a full listing of air combat claims and aircraft ground claims attributed to 249 Sqn RAF. There is no mention of an enemy aircraft credited to Fox. For various reasons 249’s scoring rate dropped dramatically when assigned to the Balkans. Between Nov 43 and the unit’s last victory on 31 Oct 44 the squadron registered 11 + 1 shared enemy a/c destroyed in the air. Most of this number were joint victories between two or three pilots. Fox may have been involved in one of the combats without receiving credit. It is also possible any victory was not officially recognised, even so, any such claim was more likely to have been air-to-ground due to the nature of 249’s operations during 1944.

Regards, Drew
