Dornier Do17z data plate identification

Can anyone please advise if it is possible to identify the particular aircraft the attached data plate may have come from ?
Many thanks
Nick

Re: Dornier Do17z data plate identification

Appears to be a typical Do17Z part plate. These are fairly common. I do not see evidence of an airplane W.Nr. that could allow historical identification.

Re: Dornier Do17z data plate identification

Steve,

Many thanks. Are you or any of the other members able to advise what the R785 suffix signifies after the Do17Z reference and from which part of the airframe this may have come from ? I understand the 02 reference in the Sach Nr. detremines this.

I obtained the attached Lorenz plate with the Dornier one posted earlier. I believe this comes from the AAG 16 Aerial Matching Unit that will have formed part of the FuG 16 VHF radio system. Does the 41 reference in the Werk Nr. signify the year of manufacture ?

I believe that both plates came from the same UK crash site and am making further enquiries.

Regards

Nick

Re: Dornier Do17z data plate identification

Hi Nick,

The Baumuster entry appears composed of two parts, Do17Z and R785, as does the Sach-Nr. entry, 17 and 362-02. I can not relate either R785 or 362-02 to a particular material category or component or accessory group; I do not have access to a Do17Z parts manual. However, some have said that R indicates either rechts (right) or repariert (repaired).

This site may help with the Lorenz plate:

http://www.cockpitinstrumente.de/index-englisch.htm

An airframe Werk-Nr. does not include date information. Can't say if that also applies to component W.Nr.

Steve

Re: Dornier Do17z data plate identification

Hi!

Thye AAG16 is for teh FuG16 radio...as far as I know the Do-17 (being an early aircraft), never had the FuG16...only the FuG3, FuG10, and FuG25.

Most bombers never had the FuG16, as it was more for single-seat fighters...thogh I beleive some models of the Ju88 did have it, later in the war.

Re: Dornier Do17z data plate identification

Steve,

Many thanks for the further advice and for pointing me in the direction of the web-site. It really is a mine of information and whilst I couldn't find the precise Ln reference to match that on the Lorenz data plate there was one that was very close and confirms the FuG16 association. I have made some further enquiries of those who run the site to see if they can tell me more.

Mike,

Thanks for the information re the FuG16 installation. I too believe that it was only the early version of this system that was installed in bombers - it generally being associated with single seat fighters.

The Dornier plate and the Lorenz plate came from the same source but I am uncertain if they are from the same aircarft - it seems unlikely.

The Dornier plate was recovered by the Tonbridge Battle of Britain Museum in 1990 and relates to the crash of a Do17z on 16 August 1940. It was shot down by Frederick "Taffy" William Higginson flying a Hurricane from no.56 squadron and crashed on the beach at Whitstable. The pilot Oblt. Brandenburg and all the crew were killed. That's about all I know I'm afraid so would be very grateful to any members who may be able to add additional information.

Regards

Nick
