Russian pilots shot down Ju88 20/9/42

Hi guys

I am still endeavouring to identify the two Russian pilots who shot down a Ju88 on 20/9/42 following the arrival of Convoy PQ18.

Any details, please?

Cheers
Brian

Re: Russian pilots shot down Ju88 20/9/42

Hi guys

Am I correct in assuming that the two unidentified Russian pilots were flying P-40s of 19 GIAP?

Cheers
Brian

Brian,

I have no claims recorded for 19 GIAP on this date. But two pilots of 760 IAP claimed one Bf-110 in the area of Pojakanda station that day at 17.00. They are Starshiy Leitenant Nikolajenkov and Mladshiy Leitenant Koslovskiy. Both flying P-40s.

Re: Russian pilots shot down Ju88 20/9/42

Brian:
You could be right (the 19 GIAP was one of the most active and successfull VVS units at that time) but take into account that the P-39 Aircobras were also entering service in that regiment at that time. Flying one of these (P-400 Aircobra "White 12" to be exact) on 15 September 1942 ace Kapìtan Pavel Stepanovich Kutakhov bagged the Bf.109F-4 W.Nr. 10139 German experte Uffz. Ludwig Scharf (18 victories, 6./JG 5), who was taken prisioner. In fact in that same combat two more Bf.109F-4s fell by Aircobra 19 GIAP's aces Grigoriy Dmitryuk and Konstantin Fomchenkov (August Braun and Kurt Schumacher).
So far I can't find Soviet pilots who claimed Junker bombers in the Artic front on that date, but I can't also find these Ju.88s in my list of Lufwaffe aircraft lost. Can you give more details? (units, crews, W.Nrs?)
Kind regards
Diego

It is in the same oblast (province), but in the coast of the Beloe More (White Sea), not far from Kandalashka, one of the key stations of Kirov railway.
I hope this information helps
Diego
