This captured airplane crashed in late 1945. Can any further details be provided:

Where and when was it captured?

What Luftwaffe unit(s) was it with?

Where did it crash?

Who was the pilot when it crashed; did he survive?

Hi Stephen...

• Surrendered at Copenhagen/Kastrup
• Coded "54" of an unknown unit
• Ferried from Amsterdam/Schipol to Farnborough on 17-Nov-45
• Crashed at Sonning, north of Reading on 30-Nov-1945
• Pilot F/Lt.D.B.Baker killed
• Cause of crash thought to have been a failure of the hydraulic motor of the propeller pitch control which allowed the engine to overspeed. The pilot had not previously flown Luftwaffe types and was possibly unfamiliar with other controls that could have over-ridden the unit. This crash, along with others, resulted in severe restrictions being placed on flying ex-Luftwaffe types.

There's a photo of "red 55" on file AIR/40/2022 at the National Archives but I only have this photocopy of it.

Thanks for that Nick... that looks very much like AM36, a Focke-Wulf Fw190F-8/U1, WNr.580058 which was coded "55" of unknown unit. This example was apparently not delivered to UK...
