Re: Ju88 shot down Nr Warminster
Paul, re A-1 or A-5 debate, upon re-checking (I had not noticed before) this 3188 L1+XC (w. Green spinners) has a reported date, possibly an "Abnahme" date (for a component, rather than whole airframe in A.I.1.(K) report No. 566/1940 from 18.9.40) says on L1+XC : "The Aircraft was Works No. 3188, fitted out 4/7/40." - but could also be from compass card or similar - whilst other RAF report on "Ju88. A.5." L1+XC (all codes in Black) says "No number plates found". Suppose some notes or marking in the cockpit of it beeing A-5 version then?
But there might be a way of different kind of proof. If some one goes to Map Ref U.3868 (1 mls south of Imber presumably), landing site of 3188 L1+XC, that is also named Ladywell Barn, and perhaps has look round (perhaps shoots some panorama photos for us to see) and we all can check if background details fit. Oh, and that other photo whould also be nice to find/see :-) regards Ed |

Re: Ju88 shot down Nr Warminster
ok Clint, no worry. I fully understrand contents in both reports (BTW have them both but had not compared them untill last night, only read each individually) and they generally agree on location, one says just Ju 88 and other Ju 88 A-5 but both give code L1+XC, but only one has statement on Black codes (we then need other report or photo for confirmation - ok?) Hard to tell if spinner on photo in post #1 is as per original specs, or if it had been painted with the "Stab. Green" (or shade similar to that), but it might be a shade lighter and glossier. I feel more photographic evidence is needed before it can be stated this is L1+XC. You asked for if there were other cases of all black codes: Yes, 4D+AA (below) but I do not recall photos of this, nor sayin this is that.
0274 Ju 88 A-1 / A-5 C 4D+AA Stab./KG 30 (Luftflotte 2) OPS (F) missing (100%) on mission to London [was downed by RAF Spitfires and belly landing in field at 18:00 hrs ( good condition and did not catch fire), near Newells Farm, Lower Beeding, Horsham, Sussex, Britain] 09.09.1940 |

Re: Ju88 shot down Nr Warminster
Hi Guy's,
seem's I have started quite the debate, I can't be 100% that this is the Aircraft L1+XC but It fits in terms time lines and landscape. I will try to locate the second photo and visit Imber if I can as it is still M.O.D training area. I would like to find the exact point and as Ed say's take a panaramic photo to confirm? Your thoughts..... Danny |

Re: Ju88 shot down Nr Warminster
Danny. Thanks for posting the photo. Much appriciated. The debate seems settled, but more info will be great. This loss interests me much in the way of as it came down rather intact - yet I know of no "more detail report", especially as it reportedly was "new" Ju 88 A-5 version - therefore suitable for detail examination or possible component recovery (for others known tested by RAF / RAE in the period). But likely it was just scrapped like so many others. However the crane and Queen Mary like transport trailer tell me it might have ended at some nearby RAF depot (or scrapyard). A panorama photo of the area seems good idea, subject it is open to public access and permission from landowner(s).
Cheers Ed |

Re: Ju88 shot down Nr Warminster
This is the Newells Farm, Nuthurst, incident on 9 September 1940.
The tops of the letters AA (4D+AA) can just be seen. Last edited by Andy Saunders; 29th August 2011 at 09:50. |

Re: Ju88 shot down Nr Warminster
Not sure if I can make out any A's Andy? If it's the same shape I think I can see it looks a bit low down on the fuselage to be the code especially if it's the top of the AA's?

Re: Ju88 shot down Nr Warminster
Also Newells farm is near Horsham Sussex my Grandad was never based there and the landscape looks different, the picture is clearly of Warminster/Sailsbury plain area. Have you got any other reason to think this is the Newells Farm incident Andy?
