Re: Mustang Mk.III
Michal
When I was a young lad I used to live near to "Fairlop". FB125 may well qualify as one of the "longest serving" Merlin Mustang in the RAF. It flew with 129Sqdn on their first operation with Mustangs on 26 April 1944 but did not quite make it to the last mission. FB125 last flew on 20 April 1945 and 129Sqdn flew three more ops after that date including 9 May as escort to the landings in the Channel Islands. FB125 was 'F' until 25 August 1944 and then became 'C'. I do not have details of its loss. Air Britain record that it "overshot on take off from Bentwaters on 7 May 1945". There were no operations on that day but apparently people were doing a lot of celebrating perhaps that might have something to do with it? Steve |
