Re: Partial Skz for He 59

Hi Norbert

L.In 16 is Luftwaffeninspektion 16 which was the title given to seenotdienst (air-sea-rescue) in July 1940.

Re: Partial Skz for He 59

Sorry Ian

I can understand that L.In stood for Luftwaffeninspektion, but that in itself cannot have had anything to do with the Seenotdienst.

I have no knowledge of German (never studied the language as such), but the word looks much more likely to stand for some kind of Inspection Unit which was checking out if an aircraft would be SOC or sent for repairs etc.

Cheers
Stig

Hi Stig

As you have observed, Luftwaffeninspektion would translate as Air-Force Inspection. There is nothing in the name which directly relates it to air-sea-rescue. It was simply the title given to the bureaucratic ‘headquarters’ unit which was given the task of overseeing/inspecting/administering the operations of the seenotdienst.

Cheers

Re: Partial Skz for He 59

OK Ian

So Luftwaffe had a lot of these L.In. units and the one listed as No 16 was responsible for the Seenotdienst? I can hardly believe that L.In units only inspected air-sea rescue units?

Cheers
Stig

Re: Partial Skz for He 59

Hi Stig

A list of the inspectorates is;

Luftwaffen Inspektion 1 – Aufklärer (Reconnaissance).
Luftwaffen Inspektion 2 – Kampfflieger (Bombers and Dive Bombers) (General der Kampfflieger)
Luftwaffen Inspektion 3 – Jagdflieger, Zerstörer, schlactflieger, (Fighter, destroyer, ground support (General der Jagdflieger)
Luftwaffen Inspektion 5 – Flugsichereit und Geraet (Air safety and equipment).
Luftwaffen Inspektion 6 – Kraftfahrwesen (Motor vehicles).
Luftwaffen Inspektion 7 – Nachrichtenverbindungswesen (Signal communications) (General der Nachrichtentruppe)
Luftwaffen Inspektion 8 – Seeflieger (Naval aircraft) (Disbanded in 1942)
Luftwaffen Inspektion 9 – Flugzeugführerschulen (Pilot training schools)
Luftwaffen Inspektion 10 – Truppendienst und Erziehung (Troop service and training)
Luftwaffen Inspektion 11 – Fallschirm und Luftlandtruppen (Parachute and air-landing forces)
Luftwaffen Inspektion 12 – Navigation
Luftwaffen Inspektion 13 – Luftshutz (Air Defence)
Luftwaffen Inspektion 14 – Sanitätswesen (Medical)
Luftwaffen Inspektion 15 – Luftverteidigungszonen (Air Defence zones)
Luftwaffen Inspektion 16 – Seenotdienst (Air sea rescue)
Luftwaffen Inspektion 17 – Bautruppen und Kriegsgefangene (Construction troops and POWS)
Luftwaffen Inspektion 18 – Luftwaffen feldeinheiten (Luftwaffe field units ).

I think that this list is from 1941. Typically for Nazi period administration there are omissions and units which appear (and usually did) duplicate their functions. Not sure that there ever was a Luftwaffeninspektion 4. There were also later changes.

Re: Partial Skz for He 59

Thanks Ian

Very interesting list.
Anyone who can advise what L.In 4 was all about?

Cheers
Stig
