Machines could have flown between or to other bases for any number of reasons - training or orientation flights, closest base due to low fuel, weather (meaning own base may have been experiencing fog or low cloud) to name but a few.

Thanks to all who replied. I am familiar with the fate of these crews but wanted to clarify the purpose of their mission. I think Brian Bines has provided the answer by PM.
