Ah, but I knew that 74 Sq RAF was European based. The first (and only?) to use rockets on Spitfire Mk.XVIs? I did wonder whether it was a mistake for 54 Sq RAF before remembering the RAAF unit and its codes

I've just read the Detail and Scale on the Corsair - another American who doesn't know his British roundels. Tut tut.

You will find photos of Spitfire Mk.Vs in India with the large blue-white roundels, as these were widely used there in 1943. However, I've never seen an RAF Mk.VIII with these.
