Identity of Dornier Do 17 sought!
Hi Guys,
I saved these pics, which I found on German eBay a while ago. I believe that the two sets of photos show the same aircraft. Both photos have references on the reverse to July & Sept 1940. Hi Melvin,
Like you I reckon it is the same aircraft, The cockpit symbol also appeared on 3Z+GS of 8/KG77 Oblt. Gillion shot down at Horsmonden Kent on 3-7-40. I seem to recall reading it was based on a flag carried by German mercenaries in the 18th Century, but do not know if its use was exclusive to 8/KG77. Would the crops in the photos and the additional side gun in the E-bay photos suggest Sept. 40 rather than July, Regards Brian Bines

I would agree that the emblem appears to be that of KG 77 but this unit had all but converted to Ju 88s by Sep 40 so maybe it was earlier?

Hi Brian, Chris, maybe Peter can inform us if there is actually a Do 17 lost near Journy on the 13th July 40? Unfortunately I do not have his excellent book on hand to check.

Guys
Checking the latest Ketley's bookLuftwaffe emblems, all three KG 77 Gruppen carried the same shield but used different colours. If I assume the film used for taking this shot was one which identifies colours in black and white as we usually interprets them , then it mostly resembles the shield used by I./KG 77. Cheers Stig

Hi, Melvin...
Great photos, once again  .The machine is definitely from KG77 as others have said. Given the shade of the propellor spinner, I would be inclined to say too light to be red but depending what image you're looking at, it could be white or yellow, thus leaving the options, presuming it's not a staff machine of course, as either 1., 4. or 7./KG77 or 3., 6, or 9./KG77. Interesting that the first handwritten caption is dated 20 September, 1940, but the typed caption is dated 13 July. My German is a little dodgy, but does the first caption say it bellylanded with 18 bombs, as in "on board"? Quite a feat after receiving 152 flak hits!
