Fighterpilots with eyeclasses

The Luftwaffe has an few pilots ( day- and nightfighters!) using eyeclasses.
Where there any "counterparts" with RAF, USAAF and the Russian Airforce?

Thanky for infos.

Re: Fighterpilots with eyeclasses

I know of a case where a Dutch pilot had pilot's goggles fitted with prescription lens and flew operational Mosquito missions.

Hi Ahafan

Are you able to name other Luftwaffe aircrew who wore glasses?

Cheers

Probably reading glasses - over the years USAF permitted fighter pilots who needed correctional lenses to be reassigned to aircraft such as cargo, tanker types where G forces not experienced.

The issue with ANY form of glasses for a fighter pilot is pulling G forces. Unless a severe headband or shooting type sports glasses with curved ear pieces are used the glasses will fall away.

My problem in later years is that I can't read a Jeppeson chart or map without reading glasses. That is a typical problem for far vision fighter pilots that get far sighted over time and cannot read up close without reading glasses or bi focals.

Fighter Pilots with Eyeglasses

Hello Brian

I have read that Oberstleutnant Friedrich Beckh (41 victories, RK, killed in action 21 June 1942) wore glasses. He appears to be the best known Luftwaffe ace that needed spectacles.

Horrido!

Leo

Re: Fighterpilots with eyeclasses

Brian,

Under the term aircrew rather than JG pilots I have BF Gef. Karl Becker mia 18-7-41 Stab I/KG40, Ogef Horst-Gunther Schohl 8/JG26 ( see JG26 War Diary vol.2 p102), & Oblt Dietrich Kornblum 4/KG53 as spectacle wearers. Dr. Priens JG 1 and II vol.3 shows Fhr. Gerhard Essig kia 5-12 44 4/JG1 with specs. additionally some of the 'weathermen' of the Wekusta units wore them,

Regards

Brian Bines

but Balztherer; who was short sighted.
and neuman of JG27- but they dare not say anything or be no more flying..that's why they remained silent.
