Re: 29/01/1944 Kg6

Hi Luc,

Both these airmen were 1st.Warts killed when a Ju 52 transporting goundcrewmen of 1st and 2nd Staffeln of KG 6 crashed by Spa Belgium while on a Transfer Flight. The NVM gives 12 ground crew killed and puts the cause to enemy nightfighter original burials ar Brusthem b. St.Trond.

Re: 29/01/1944 Kg6

Brian,

Many thanks for your reply.
G6+MU was a Ju52 which crashed at Stoumont (postalcode 4987) on 29/01/1944 and probably all aboard got killed.
For the same date I found on the Volksbund website :
Ofw. Herbert Stuhr, Ofw. Fritz Kreidler,Gefr.Karl Wegand,Fw. Erhard Binner,Fw.Werner Rothenberg,Uffz.Max Reissmann,Gefr.Herbert Diebold,
Uffz.Ferdinand Reuss, Uffz.Max Schoeppner,Fw.Karl Tolle and Fw.Walter Leffler.
Are this the passengers ?

Many thanks and best regards from a cold Belgium.

Luc

Re: 29/01/1944 Kg6

Luc,

As an afterthought in the book 'Massacre At Malmedy' it states that a citizen of Stourmont spoke to ObStfhr.Jochen Peiper, during the Battle of the Bulge, stating that on 21st(?) Jan. 1944 local people had rescued airman from a crashed Luftwaffe transport. The book says that the aircraft was flying from Bremen to Chievres and crashed a few kilometres from Stourmont and the wounded were taken to the Hospital at Spa. As a result the people of Stourmont were not harmed .
Unless there was another loss of a transport on 21st this seems like the same incident involving G6+MU on the 29th. have you any thoughts on this,

Regards

Brian

Brian: Battle of the Bulge was 1944-45 not 43-44!

Re: 29/01/1944 Kg6

Chris, sorry if my post is not clear the reported conversation with Jochen Peiper was on 19th.Dec.1944 when Belgium citizens were concerned they would be treated as terrorists. To counter this they recounted that on 21st(?) Jan. 1944 they had helped rescue German servicemen from a Luftwaffe Aircraft that had crashed and was on fire, while on a flight to Chievres,

Regards
Brian

Brian and Phil,

Many thanks for your interesting replies.

A Ju88 crashed after t/o due to an engine failure on 21/01/1944.This was possibly a plane of KG6. This unit lost Uffz Werner Jung, Gefr Kurt Hoeft and Uffz Karl Patzer - all buried at lommel German War cemetery - on 21/01/1944. I don't know if they were the crewmembers of the crashed Ju88.

Not been able to find any other crash at Stoumont.

Best regards

Luc
