lucky find in the Aegean

Hi gents,

A trawler from the island of Naxos brought with its nets near Ikaria a valuable Arado 196 on the surface. A part of it. The bird was lying aprox. 480 m deep.
I think, i have it in my book, it must be:
28.02.44 Ar 196 A3 (W.Nr. 0216) 100% infolge Maschinenschadens vor der Insel Nikaria notgewassert, beim Abschleppversuch umgekippt und gesunken.

I found the story here with a lot of pics:

Byron

Re: lucky find in the Aegean

Hello,

the find just occurred. The fisherman wants to keep it, as reward for having his nets destroied, we `ll see what happens. I hope Tatoi museum will take care.
The inhabitants of Naxos want to have it placed in shallow waters in order to desplay it as a divers attraction.
Some more pics.

Nice find, a shame the canopy isn't more intact, it could have been used to fix the Arado in USA that was vandalized by a bridge ....

As a wreck it is worth a LOT more than some fishing net!!! If he gets ahold of it, we might as well kiss any preservation goodbye...same with being an underwater attraction. It should be available for everyone to see.

Crossing my fingers that the government and museum step in quickly.

Re: lucky find in the Aegean

I agree with you Mike,

the fisherman doesn`t have any legal right to keep the plane, maybe he deserves some conpensation.
Being an underwater attraction? it will be soon looted.

the only solution is the Tatoi musem where it can be preserved.
