Re: Fw. Otto Unertl 9./JG77 KIA 25-April-1941

Hello Aviator

The place is known and located exactly, http://maps.google.com/maps/myplaces?ll=37.576968,22.809951&spn=0.001278,0.001 808&ctz=-180&t=h&z=19

I spoke to the land owner, he was about 5-6 years old at that time an he only heard the story from his father and friends. They said that the plane was totally destructed and they found only the boots of the pilot

Only this so far...

Re: Fw. Otto Unertl 9./JG77 KIA 25-April-1941

Hello,

during my researches on JG 77, I have been in touch with Unertl's family.
They had not much, but a document saying the following could be of help for you:
30.12.1941:

Hope that it helps.

Best regards

Erik

Re: Fw. Otto Unertl 9./JG77 KIA 25-April-1941

Hello tgsdim and Erik,

Thank you for these details! During these days the Luftwaffe bombed the british positions along the Argos-Nauplia road and especially next to the nearby hills. At least one Stukas crashed there. I suppose the me 109 was hit by Flak and crashed at low altitude.Fact is that he was buried next to te plane and now i read that he was transfered to Argos North.I suppose that more than his boots was found...
Is there any chanche for more info/material from the family? Where is the famiy living?

Regards,
Aviator

Re: Fw. Otto Unertl 9./JG77 KIA 25-April-1941

Hi Aviator,
the location is the one I gave further up.

The town of Argos and more precisely, a small village called "fihtia" had a gravel air strip used initially by the British and after from the Germans as a air-base (used also during the battle of Crete), must be the place were Otto was re-burried after a period of some months from the crash, according to the "new data".
I have some problems with google earth, once solved, I can mark the position of the flak , the ship which was bombed and the crash position.
