Johannes " macky " Steinhoff May 1940

Hi whilst looking at JG52's early claims during the French Campaign of May to June 1940, Steinhoff's name is not evident in any of these claims.
Was Johannes Steinhoff on leave or on other duties?
Any help would be most appreciated.
Best regs,
Steve.

Steinhoff was with 11/JG 2 to 25 Jun 40 not 4/JG 52. He shot down 2 Blenheims 10 May 40

Re: Johannes " macky " Steinhoff May 1940

Evening Chris thanks for your reply.
My source states these two Blenheim claims were with 4/JG52 obviously now incorrect.
,
Would you happen to know when he joined 4/JG52 did he fly white 1+ , i have a very old coloured profile showing white 1+ attributed to Steinhoff, or anybody else who may have any knowledge of Steinhoff's earlier Bf109's.
Kindest regs,
Steve.

Hi Steve

Coincidently there is an image of his Bf109D-1 N+7 on eBay identified by Goran Larson as at Vaernes during Operation Weserubung:

PM me if you'd like some more images.

Cheers

Steinhoff arrived on 4/JG 52 in August 1940 but his first kill was not until 30 Sep 40. There are no photos in Jochen Prien's book

Hi ChrisS, many thanks for providing the link for photos of Steinhoff's Black 7+N when with 11(N)/JG2 . Ive not seen these before so im particularly pleased to see these.
Do you have his White 1+ when with 4/JG52 late August-Sept 1940?

Hi Chris G, thank you also for your reply on Steinhoff and his first kill.

Kindest regs,
Steve.

Re: Johannes " macky " Steinhoff May 1940

Hi again Steve

There was another thread on Steinhof here http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/archiv...p?t-16149.html which may muddy the water even more!

I do have two images of a Bf-109E White 1 of 4./JG 52 with the sword on shield emblem which according to Sinisa Sestanovic in 'Emblems of (the) Jagdwaffe 1936-1945' was introduced in the winter of 1940-41. But the images show a yellow Russia rumpfband and I have annotated the images 'July 1942' so my guess is that these are not images of Steinhof's machine.

However according to Barbas in 'Die Geschichte der II.Gruppe des JG 52' the unit did not use the two gruppe 'bar'. If this is correct then I do have a number of White 1 images taken during the Spring of 1940. But as Steinhof was not appointed Staka until August 1940 these also would probably not be his plane either!

You are welcome to all the images, PM me with your email addy.

Chris

And another one here that backs up Doug & Larry's data showing Steinhoff with 10./JG-2 although the following thread shows him as Staka in early June 1940... http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/showth...ight=steinhoff

Re: Johannes " macky " Steinhoff May 1940

Having just read the Barbas tome he comments that Steinhof was Staka of 4./JG 52 from 01-02-1940. So perhaps Jochen can comment if he sees this.

Re: Johannes " macky " Steinhoff May 1940

Here are Steinhoff's 1939-40 claims. There are 2-3 photos from several sources of his early machines - Bf 109D-1 WNr. 630 'white N+7' being one, and I believe another in one of the early 'Jagdfliegerverbande' volumes when he was with 11.(N)/JG 2, but I don't recall the details specifically. There is another photo in the Ries 'Rudder Markings' book (p.132) of a BoB rudder with claims which Ries claims is the machine of Steinhoff. The machine was lost by another pilot who made no claims - but Ries' date doesn't jibe with Steinhoff's 5th claim. Unfortunately his available FBs start in Jun/Jul-41, so there is no way to confirm the Ries photo.
