Harlinghausen - November 1940
Morning I have seen the entry in the Wehrmachtbericht dated 3rd Nov 1940 about Harlinghausen's 20th merchant ship kill of the British East Coast. Can anyone tell me what ship was sunk and where? Also does anyone know how long and in what capacity Harlinghausen had been operating off the east coast? Presumably he was still commanding Führungskette des X Fliegerkorps in Nov 1940? Any details appreciated as usual. James

Hi James,
he reached this mark on 2.11.40 claiming destruction of 6000 BRT steamship SE of Kinnaird Head (his no.20 victim, total tonnage: 101 000 BRT). Regards Robert

No losses to air attack recorded here on 2 Nov 40.
http://www.naval-history.net/xDKWW2-4011-24NOV01.htm On 3 Nov 40 there are two possible candidates: British steamer KILDALE (3877grt) was sunk by German bombing in 57‑45N, 01‑45W from the convoy. British steamer EROS (5888grt) was damaged by German bombing in 57‑48N, 01‑54W from the convoy. Both off Scotland, Kinnaird Head. Also on that day: British steamer WINDSOR CASTLE (19, 141grt) was damaged by German bombing in 54‑12N, 13‑18W. Off the Isle of Man though. All the best Andreas

I think it's more likely the date is wrong. Size of the vessels and location check out, only the date is one day off.

Or the Wehrmachtbericht relates to claims made on 3 Nov. 1940 - then (with the slightest correction to 57º58N') it is only the GRT that is adrift.

The Eros would seem to be closest but from what Robert is saying it must be either an unrecorded loss or an outright miss!
