Smile He 177 claimed on 25th Feb 1944

Could anyone confirm the claim of 4 Spitfires from 333 SQN led by Ltn Fredrik Fearnley for a He 177 or Fw 200 brought down near airfield St. Trond at 11:00 this day. This large German aircraft was attacked during landing on probably airfield St. Trond and was observed crashing into the ground. However Ltn. Fearnley, then a leading Norwegian fighter ace, was also seen diving into the ground and killed probably hit by airfield defence.

If aviable any codes, WNr. or crew details greatly appreciated. Could it possible be a aircraft from Ergänzungsgruppe IV./KG 40 ?

Greetings from Norway

Knut

Re: He 177 claimed on 25th Feb 1944

Hello Knut,
I beleive this is probaly He 177A3 5J+AL of 3/KG100 w/n 332189 which according to the NVM was shot down by 'US fighters' 12 km N/W of St.Trond. Ff Ofw. Arno Scholz, B Ofw. Walter Helbig, Bf. Ogef. Kurt Quick and Bm.Uffz. Horst Moche all injured (gunners both uninjured ?)aircraft on transfer flight. At this time the aircraft had the old KG 4 codes rather than the '6N' of KG 100.
Thanks for the information on the Condor shot down on 29th.Jan,
Regards
Brian

Knut,
I'm sure it's just a typo but that would be 331 and not 333 Sqn Spitfires. Otherwise I believe history would have to be rewritten.

Hi Kyrre

You are correct, a misprint, 331 SQN Spitfires.

Greetings

Knut

Thumbs up Re: He 177 claimed on 25th Feb 1944

Hi
Chris and Brian

Thank you very much for your excellent replies. Hope I can rely on your attention later when I am looking for odd German planes claimed by Nordic pilots in RAF.

Greetings from wintercold Norway

Knut
