Re: MARYLANDS over MALTA Brian Cull

Hi John

Not much info on ULTRA, sorry. However, Warburton and other aircrew DID NOT know of ULTRA.

Cheers
Brian

"Warburton and other aircrew DID NOT know of ULTRA"

Aircrew certainly didn't but the "Reports to Allied Commands" (see the DEFE3 file series) reaching their superiors probably influenced their assignments without the pilots knowing. I've not looked at the traffic for the relevant period, so I can't be more specific.

Re: MARYLANDS over MALTA Brian Cull

THX Brian. Warburton, et al, certainly did not know of ULTRA--too low on the security totem pole, and what would have happened had they been captured?

The story is that the "command" through intercepts of both German and Italian signals, knew the times and approximate routes of convoys sailing to NA. The temptation would be to send a bombing raid, but this might let the enemy know/think their signals were compromised. So, a recon plane was sent out to "find" the convoys and confirm ULTRA, with the likeyhood the enemy would see them. After the "find", a raid was scheduled.

Nick can correct me.

That's the story. Didn't always work that way.
