Were any P-38 lost over the Mediterenean op April 19th 1943 in combat with Me 210?

Thanks,

Re: P-38 Med loss

To my mind quickly comes only one P-38 lost in those times in air combat against Bf 109 piloted by the German ace Julius Meimberg somewhere over Tunis. The American survived, was taken POW and met Meimberg later in German field hospital, where Meimberg was little later interned due to burning injuries.

Re: P-38 Med loss

Hi John,

Based on Mark Reardon's extensive research, I couldn't find any P-38 losses for that date.

Cheers,
Andrew A.

Re: P-38 Med loss

Let me re-phrase my question. I am looking into possible claims of the III./ZG 1 (flying Me 210's) concerning P-38 Lightnings during their operations over Africa/Med. The III./ZG 1 was in that area between 01.10.1942 and 01.07.1943. At least one pilot claimed a P-38 which flew escort for bombers attacking a German convoy. I believe the claim was before 01.04.1943. Listed combats of III./ZG 1 with Lightnings are;

02.12.1942
05.12.1942
19.04.1943
22.05.1943
24.05.1943

Are there any details know about Me 210 claims of P-38 units in the Med? That list might be helpful in determining these specific combats.

Thanks,

John

Re: P-38 Med loss

Hello John,
Try searching through this website -
Welcome to Aviation Archaeology

There were many P-38's lost in the period October 42 to July 43, and it will take a while going through those listed.

All the best
Alex
