Re: Lufttransportgruppe (See) 1

Kris,

a unit with the designation "Lufttransportgruppe (See) 1" did not exist, there were only Lufttransportstaffel (See) 1 to 3. Lufttransportstaffel (See) 1 operated first with the unit code G6+xJ and from late 1943 the three Staffeln flew with 8A+xJ, K, L.

The designation "17./TG 4" is a misinterpretation of the unit code G6+xJ.

Question Re: Lufttransportgruppe (See) 1

It is very possible information.
So for example: to which "Staffel" and unit belong Ju52 with code: 8A + LJ (period: 1944/45)
Is it possble that code: 8A was written as small letters and LJ as bigger code on the side shell of a/c?

Example (for period 1944/45):
8A
+ LJ and tail rudder: ISL
I wonder if exist orginal photos in Internet/Books of Ju52 from the same unit ?

By the way:

"In Dec'43, Ju52/3m floatplanes were operated with floatplane Staffel of TG4, to which LTSta(See) 1 was later attached. Later LTSta(See) 1 was absorbed into TG 4 and became 17.Staffel. However, as TG 4 was known to have used Roman numerals in the tactical code to indicate the Gruppe, it would seem that even after re-designation, some aircraft of 17./TG 4 may have been attached to I./TG 4."

Some more about TG4 (very interested information ):

"...11.43-10.44 in Phaliron / Athen ..."

"....The identity of Kea’s “Tante Ju” (the name comes from “Auntie Ju”, affectionate German nick name which the pilots and parachutists had given to the Junker 52’s), was discovered through a routine log report filed by a search and rescue German Dornier 24 (Werknummer 3214 ), which since the 13th of August 1943 belonged to the German Sea Rescue Squadron 7 (Seenotstaffel 7), located in Faliro, Athens area. According to this entry, the rescuing Dornier 24 on 6th September 1943, crewed by Leutnant Pfaffendorf, Oberfeldwebel Becker, Feldwebel Steinbock, Feldwebel Bohnke, Obergefreiter Rausch and Feldwebel Lind, took part in a search and rescue operation involving a missing Junkers 52, bearing the construction number (Werknummer) 6590, of the I/TG 4, i.e. the first group (I = Erste Gruppe) of Transport Wing 4 (TG 4 = Transportgeschwader 4) which was based in Kalamaki in the Saronic Gulf (near Athens). The airplane had been lost after ditching in the northwest sea of Kea, due to fuel supply problems. Of the Junkers 52 passengers and crew, one was lost and two were wounded, all others rescued and transferred to Athens...."

Re: Lufttransportgruppe (See) 1

J was not used as Staffel letter. What is the source of your information on 8A+LJ. It should possible read 8A+JL. J in red.

Re: Lufttransportgruppe (See) 1

To me it looks like a D or O with a part painted out. It's not a normal J.

Re: Lufttransportgruppe (See) 1

First of all, the correct unit designation for these Staffeln were Seetransportfliegerstaffel 1, 2 and 3 respectively. All three Staffeln were given the common unit code 8A+ and carried the normal Staffel-lettters H, K and L for 1st., 2nd. and 3rd. Staffeln.

The Seetr.Fl.St.2 was formally established at the end of August 1943 from the Ju 52-Staffel (See) which had been locally and temporary formed by Luftflotte 2. Following a resting period in Germnay, this Staffel transferred to Norway late 1943 to replace Seetransportfliegertaffel 3. The unit remained in Norway for the rest of the war.

The Seetr.Fl.St.3 was also formed at the end of August 1943 by renaming the floatplane-staffel 1./Transportfliegergruppe 20 of Luflotte 5. This unit transferred from Hommelvik in Norway to Semlin and Saloniki during December 1943. It was finally disbanded in early September 1944.

Unfortunately, I have little info about the Seetransportfliegerstaffel 1.

The Ju 52 Aircraft for these three Staffeln were converted from land-planes to floatplanes during the summer and early autumn of 1943. Many of the aircraft came straight off the production lines in both Germany and France.
