Re: He 111K engages Blenheims 3 Nov 40
The claim of Woick was not confirmed.
He was scrambled after an intruder was reported over Holland at 18.17 hrs. Andy, the victim of 248 Sqn was a He 111 from 1.(F)/120. It returned with 20 bullet holes and slightly wounded observer. A second German recon a/c (operating from Norway) was also attacked on this day. Regards Robert |

Re: He 111K engages Blenheims 3 Nov 40
Thanks Andy
Now, even the listed time of the search party is too early, so unless the time of Woick's claim is wrong, we can rule out that as well. Where was the patroling area? PCQC 4344/090T means nothing to me I'm afraid. Robert Since Prien et al confirms Woick's claim was accepted, from where is your source that it was not? I notice the claim lacks a B in the right hand column, but the pilots score is numbered and not written as (n.b.) Also, since 1.(F)/120 was based at Stavanger-Sola at the time, I find it odd they were on a recce-flight at sea level this far south to be intercepted by these Blenheims but, reverse thinking, I also find it odd that 248 Sq would patrol an area so far north as to come across a Heinkel from Norway. Now where was that PCQC again? And what intruder was over the Dutch coast at around a quarter past six in the evening??Very interesting discussion by the way, thanks for taking part!! Cheers Stig |

Re: He 111K engages Blenheims 3 Nov 40
I also have the crew of Oblt Horst Hesse of 1/120 failing to return from a mission over UK on 4 Nov 40, last heard on on PlQ 06 Ost 30. They were flying in a Ju 88 A-5????

Re: He 111K engages Blenheims 3 Nov 40
Hi Stig,
It a Coastal Command grid square reference for 1940, I've located a period map at RAFM London so will go up there on Tuesday to get exact position. As Chris Goss pointed out the action took place NE Scotland at Rattay Head, Aberdeenshire. I'll let you know how I get on. Andy Quote:

Re: He 111K engages Blenheims 3 Nov 40
Chris,
An unrelated loss I believe. Still awaiting clarification from Robert on the 1.(F)/120 casualty on the previous day. 4 November 1940 1.(F)/120 Junkers Ju88A-5 (0475). Aborted sortie to northern Scotland due to engine failure and crashed in the North Sea 50 miles west of Utsira during return flight 11.07 a.m. FF Fw Helmut Hörning, BO Oberlt Horst Hesse, BS Gefr Johann Wülbeck, and BF Uffz Werner Kriegel all missing. Aircraft 100% write-off. No trace was found despite extensive search of the area throughout the afternoon by two He59 of Seenotflugkdo.5 from Stavanger supported by five Do17 and three He111. |

Re: He 111K engages Blenheims 3 Nov 40
Hi,
thanks to KTB of Seenotstaffel 5 I can provide more details: one of the He 111`s engines was put out of order in this combat and at 14.00 hrs (German time) Seenotzentale asked Seenotstaffel 5 to send up an aircraft to be ready for possible ditching. It had been reported that He 111 was flying to Stavanger. He 111 landed without further problems in Stavanger and the rescue seaplane was later ordered to return and at 16.13 hrs landed in base. Re: He 111K engages Blenheims 3 Nov 40
Many thanks Robert. All resolved apart from the claim by WOICK which is unsubstantiated & a complete 'red herring'.

Re: He 111K engages Blenheims 3 Nov 40
Thank you to all who have helped. I'll write up Sergeant Moynham's WOP/AG on G-George last and pervious flights with 248 Squadron and forward the findings onto his 95 Year Old sister.
Warmest Regards Andy Bird |
