Re: Powered take-off device?

Wikipedia sufferes as all multi media does. Correct info is replaced by false, because it is tought more correct. False info repeated enough times becomes fact.
"In service" is wrong term here. These were multi-use units and not that many needed to "support" fleet of planes. Early Ju 88´s were designed to take them, so likely in use or available already by 1940-1941.

Re: Powered take-off device?

I cannot confirm the units used but the Flugbuch certainly refers to rockets being used on an He 111. I am away from home at present but can add a scan later in the week.

Re: Powered take-off device?

Walter ones were rocket, as Starthilfe ("Take off helper") they tested winch launches. ATM I can not find photos of them. They were either Petrol or Diesel powered.
Most gliding fields have winch launches as standard, and I have several hundred under my belt (btw on german built gliders, including Grunau Baby, post war built tho).

Yay... technically flown a Warbird!

Re: Powered take-off device?

Walter HWK 109-500 was used/tested by KGr506 Ju 88 aircraft at Fliegerhorst Leeuwarden (The Netherlands) too. Some of these were Ju 88A-5 aircraft.

Re: Powered take-off device?

As promised, here is a link to a thread showing scans of a Flugbuch I have in my collection that belonged to a man in 2. Staffel, Kampfgruppe 126 showing 'Roketenstart' being used on a Heinkel 111 in October 1940. It seems a very early date to me. http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/showthread.php?t=42933

Re: Powered take-off device?

"Used". It says "Raketenstart" and appears a training flight, or two, not "Feindflug". Others before and after are operational ones with 2 LMB´s (Luftminen B).

This tells me, crew were familirized with it, in case they needed it. Only later in the war (IRC, in my view) were they used on operations/larger scale. -Ed

Re: Powered take-off device?

Hi Ed. I think the mission to Llanelly also says Roket in the comments doesn't it?

Re: Powered take-off device?

It does, but does not list LMB´s, and features new Kaptain - I wonder if this might have been an extra lagre load (or too little wind for takeoff!?) -Ed

But I think we are driftin´ away..
