I vaguely recall reading that some day-fighter units were equipped with stripped-down/souped-up fighters in order to catch the Mossies, but were disbanded after a while for lack of success - or am I confusing these with the night-fighter units?

I would like to know of any modifications to improve the speed of fighters for this purpose, and what result they had.

you could start by checking this long thread over at the LEMB, 'Intercepting Mosquitos'

Talking Re: Anti Mosquito Ops with 6/JG 300 and 1/NJGr 10.

Tony the two volumes on JG 300 will help with JG 300's part. 1./NJGr 10 flew the ops as stated but in part through the fall of 44 till put back in intercepting RAF 4 engines. Kommando Welter-10./NJG 11 of course with the Me 262A-1a and much later the B-1 two seater but that is really another story covered later in a seperate volume
