Monday, 30 November 1942

This occurred when 12 P-38s of the 48th Squadron, themselves on a TacR mission, encountered ten Bf 109s, one of which 1/Lt Virgil Smith claimed shot down; two more were claimed as probables and another as damaged. However, one US fighter flown by 2/Lt Cole failed to return. Fw Anton Hafner of 4./JG 51 claiming a P-38 south-east of Tunis at 1447.

US Casualties:

48th FS/14th FG - P-38 41-7644 shot down by Bf 109s Tunis 1500 - 2/Lt Arthur V. Cole PoW.

Hi - there is another photo from left side and I´m thinking, that this P-38 is same, like this burning P-38 from german propaganda photo

Re captured P-38. I think F-5E coded 44-23725

Bauer:
rebuilt to F-5E. With 354th Air Services Squadron , kidnapped by pilot from 82nd Oct 13, 1944 and landed at Linate airfield near Mediolan. Plane captured by Germans and used by KG200 as T9+MK. Recaptured by US troops Schwangau May 1945.
