Re: rare birds - P-26, P-35, P-43
I scanned through Osprey's Chines Aces book by Raymond Cheung and found several references to Chinese pilots and P-43s.
It looks like they got them some time in 1942. Bad reputation for fuel leaking onto exhausts and catching fire. You-hsin KAO in a P-43 (coded 2101?) claimed a Ki-43 on 12/1/43 (and later 2x Ki-43's in a P-40N and another in a P-51). A photo caption states he made several claims in a P-43, but I can't see any more detail. KAO's total claims were 8 or 8.33, and only a credit for 0.33 is recorded for him in earlier aircraft (usually I-15s), so 4 claims are unknown. Chi-kai CHOW in a P-43 coded 2401 claimed a Ki-46-III in Oct 1942. Cheers Peter |
