Re: Missing B-24
For interest.
"Coffee Tower" Page 151. Column 2. " at 0730, 34planes took off". page 152. Column 1 " Not so for a number of 459th crews, however. Missing Air Crew Reports list four 459th crews and aeroplanes lost on December 18 - but the Group Operations Report indicates a full accounting came up with a far higher number. Here's an excerpt from that report: "Bombing was by PFF methods( Mickey), one aircraft returned early and four aircraft returned prior to bombing, because of mechanical difficulties. Five aircraft jettisoned bombs because box leader did not drop bombs. Box leader is missing. One B-24 is at the island of VI's; one B-24 was seen to crashing the water eight miles north of the Spur, and nineB-24s were missing.Personnel casualties were 101 crew members missing in action. Moderate to intense, accurate flak was experienced at the target." |
