From edwest2's post of August 8th.

Is this not a late WWI Albatros?

Re: eBay: German intrest

A close examination shows a similar engine arrangement but the fuselage is different. I cannot identify the markings.

This is indeed a crashed WW 1 German aircraft since it carries the national markings introduced I believe early in 1918.
Aircraft looks like a two-seater but German two-seaters during WW 1 are notoriously difficult to identify, especially if broken up like this.
But if an Albatros model it could possibly be a C.X or C.XII

Cheers

This is definitely not an Albatros C.XII. The markings are not the same. The markings may be Swiss.

The aircraft is a DFW C.V (note the "WOTAN" decal on the propeller blade).

A crashed DFW C.V with a similar Monogram (A.S.? or S.A.?) marking is depicted in Windsock Datafile 53 - DFW C.V, by Peter Grosz. The caption reads:

44. Crashed DFW C.V of Flieger-Abteilung 68 showing the rib taping and the breather louvre in front of the tailfin.

The aircraft in the Windsock Datafile has the late war narrow balkenkreuzes, different to the crosses on the ebay photo.

Re: eBay: German intrest

Well done Col

Yes, I can see the small "inverted" strut going from the stabilizor to the fin.
The Balkenkreuz visible lasted only a very short time (officially between 17 March 1918 until 10 April 1918) when they were replaced by the simplified Balkenkreuz referred to by Col. These lasted for the remainder of WW 1.
Of course in practice it took much more time to repaint the aircraft already at the front, so the aircraft on the photo does not have to have been w/o between the two dates listed.

Cheers
Stig
