The machine appears to have no B before the 38 and is possibly wearing a flying school number rather than a serial number.

I have some doubt about whether this is a Bestellnummer rather than a flying school assigned number, if it is a Bestellnummer then it is a previously unknown serial. It could perhaps be a previous Bavarian air force number, transferred over to look like a Bestellnummer which did happen. Indeed this machines markings resemble a number of Bavarian LVG B.I (Ot) in Aeronaut's LVG Aircraft of World War One Vol.1.In any event an interesting (to me anyway ) photo.
