Re: Photo Curtiss Aircraft
Hello,
Currently on ebay are two photos of a Curtiss JN-4D(?) serial 212* at: https://www.ebay.com/itm/TX-Texas-Sa...sAAOSwt2lfQyd7 https://www.ebay.com/itm/TX-Texas-Sa...MAAOSwf2RfQyc1 To be honest I'm not totally sure of the type of aircraft shown. Checking Joe Baugher's site at http://joebaugher.com/usaf_serials/1908-1920.html which I usually do leaves me no clearer as 212 was a Sturtevant S-4 and all machines in the 212* range appear to have been cancelled. Re: Photo Curtiss Aircraft
Hi Clint
Pity the photos are so indifferent.... What you are looking at are not US Signal Corps/Air Service serial numbers, but those huge training centers' own code system digits. In 1918 Curtiss with good help of other sub-manufacturers were spitting out Jennies as fast as they could. At some point, with the US training centers being swamped with all these trainers, someone came up with the good idea to have their own code numbers all very neatly collected together instead of the enormous mixture of various true serial numbers. Pity for us, but admittedly a relief for everyone working at those bases at the time. Cheers Stig |
