On the upside I’ve just saved €300 on an impulse purchase and bought a strimmer from the UK with the money instead. Doesn’t fit quite aswell on my bookshelf but will hopefully do a better job of keeping my field in check

Books are 0% VAT rated in the UK. Therefore if you buy books abroad there is no extra charge when they arrive in the UK.

Not sure how it applies to electronic media, guess it is still 20%

I love paper even more now

I think that the UK government have taken VAT off eBooks (or announced the intention). Beware, though. It’s not just VAT, sometimes Customs open parcels, none too delicately, to check the contents match the declaration and then charge you about £8 for doing so. It’s happened to me twice with cd-audiobooks coming from the USA, so no doubt “taking back control” will mean the same for packages arriving from the EU.
