Hurricane shot down 16/10-1939?

I am looking for identety of a RAF fighter plane most likely a Hurricane that was hit in combat with a Ju 88 from I/KG 30. Made a crash landing around Firth of Forth at 1440 hour german time.

Re: Hurricane shot down 16/10-1939?

Hello Junker,

It was actually a Spitfire of 603 Squadron, L1048 piloted by Acting Pilot Officer George Kemp Gilroy. One bullet went through the top of the engine cowling.
This is noted briefly in the 603 Sqn. ORB (AIR 27/2079), but the entire action is dealt with in great detain in ‘THE GREATEST SQUADRON OF THEM ALL’, Vol. 1 by David Ross, with Bruce Blanche and William Simpson.

Regards,

Martin Gleeson.

Thank's a lot. The combat was filmed from the Ju 88. You see the fighter crashlanding.

Re: Hurricane shot down 16/10-1939?

L1048 was recovered and returned to service, eventually becoming 3248M.So cannot truly be a loss at that time. It was lost at a later date though. With 152 Sqn, 26 November 1940, its Pilot was Sgt. Zygmunt KLEIN, (Polish).Sgt. KLEIN was shot down on the 28th November, off the Isle of Wight he was never recovered, his Spitfire that day was P9427, Could not find him in the CWGC site ? But he is remembered on the Polish War Memorial, Hillingdon, London.

Re: Hurricane shot down 16/10-1939?

Junker,

If a fighter was filmed crashlanding from the Ju 88 then it certainly was not on 16 October 1939. Only Spitfires of 602 and 603 Squadrons were engaged and the only damage suffered was to L1048 which was landed back at Turnhouse airfield. If it looks like a Hurricane - as per your original post - that adds to my belief it was not on 16 October 1939.

Regards,

Martin.

Re: Hurricane shot down 16/10-1939?

It's not a spifire. Location and time is as above as staed in the german report. Is there at any time in autum 1939 were a Hurricane makes a crashlanding in the area?

Re: Hurricane shot down 16/10-1939?

Hello Junker So let's go back to the start.
Follow I/KG30 's operations over the UK, when did they start ? Then follow their raids from then. That may give a true date for the combat you look for.

However if I have it correctly they only formed on the 15th November '39 ?
See this link available on the forum -
http://www.ww2.dk/air/kampf/kg30.htm

See also this thread -

http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/showth...light=I%2FKG30

So maybe not I/KG30 but 2/KG25 ?

Ah, I now see the date of the first Raid, of the Luftwaffe over Great Britain was on Monday 9th October 39.
On the 16th and 17th they raided over the Firth of Forth. So it sure looks like you have the correct details. And they did meet fighter opposition. At least four Luftwaffe aircraft went down.

Re: Hurricane shot down 16/10-1939?

Looks like it could have been L1084, Gilroy. 603 Sqn. 16/10/39.
Took a hit but may have then took evasive action and as the ORB all returned .

602 shows no losses -

603 Sqdn

Maybe if you show us the film ?

It's not possible any longer to attach image in here.
All detail mentioned by me are directly from the Luftwaffe report to Kriegsmarine. Thank's for your help.
