P/O R Borne 341Sq & friendly fire whirlwind ?
Hi All,
A new one for me both the whirlwind photo and the apparent situation. Was there a P/O Roger Borne with 341 Sq and did he accidently shoot down a whirlwind ? Link to the french thread below Cheers Jerry http://www.aerostories.org/~aeroforu...p?nummsg=16141 translated as :- Who could help me to identify this allied plane taken in the movies-machine-gun of PO Roger Borne (sqdn 341 “Alsace”) during the winter 1943? |

Re: P/O R Borne 341Sq & friendly fire whirlwind ?
Interesting indeed, but worth remembering that the presence of a Whirlwind in a CCG film does not mean it was shot down or even fired upon as in most (All?) RAF fighters CCG could be operated independently of the guns.

Yeah true, I couldn't see any actual fire in the film frame that was posted and I don't know if there are any other frames, so I thought I would find out if there was a P/O Roger Borne with 341Sq and if any claims were made in late '43. Thought best place was here, my on line research has drawn blanks and my research notes are all still packed, and might be for a few months yet due to my emigration. Thanks for the reply cheers Jerry |

Re: P/O R Borne 341Sq & friendly fire whirlwind ?
Hi Jerry
I am watching this with much interest! Yes, there was a Sous-Lt Roger Borne serving with 341 Squadron in 1943. The only claim I have for him was for a FW190 probable on 30/12/43. I will check 341's ORB as soon as I can get to the PRO - probably next week. Cheers Brian |

Re: P/O R Borne 341Sq & friendly fire whirlwind ?
Borne was KIA on 20/4/45, the last pilot lost by 341 Sqn during the war. He arrived in the squadron on 15 March 1943, so if he engaged a Whirlwind during the winter 43 (42-43, as in 43-44 there were no more Whirlwind around) it was in its first days with the squadron, or it was during its OTU time.

Re: P/O R Borne 341Sq & friendly fire whirlwind ?
Hi Brian
Interesting he was with 341Sq, I have no whirlwind loss for 30-12-43, but will be interested in what you find at the PRO, a long way away for me now I am in Vancouver!! Cheers Jerry Hi Laurent Rizzotti Thanks for the info, yeah they were converting to typhoons in dec '43, it was the last days of whirlwinds, so if an incident did happen it was between march & dec 43. Or maybe a camera gun excercise at the OTU, do you know which OTU he was with ? Cheers Jerry |

Re: P/O R Borne 341Sq & friendly fire whirlwind ?
Jerry,
I have all the movie and there ANY actual fire on each frame. These two reels cover about thirty minutes and there are only exercises from april to december 1943. Alas for the FW190 probable there are no movie. Aspirant Roger Borne posted from OTU 58 on 2 march 1943. HTH Bertrand |
