St Kap 2./NJG 2 1940-41

According to recollections from unit members written down in the 60'ies or early 70'ies Oblt. Schütze was Staffelkapitän of 5./NJG1 from mid July 1940 following Oblt. Streib. On July 19th he was apparently wounded during an intruder mission over England and hospitalized for some time. Lt. Albert Schulz is said to have stepped in as initial substitution Staffelkapitän because Oblt. R. Jung who was second in command was provisionally leading the 6./NJG1 respectively the renamed 3./NJG2. Some time between end of August and 1st October 1940 Jung became Staffelkapitän 2./NJG2. Source: RL 10/588, BAMA.

Thanks-interesting but confusing! I can see no mention of him being wounded in Luftwaffe records (which Matti has confirmed) and July 1940 would have been too early for intruder missions. The published sources state Streib who was St Kap 2./NJG 1 became Gr Kdr I./NJG 12 7 October 1940 just after around the time II./NJG 1 became I./NJG 2

Chris, I agree that these recollections need to be taken with a grain of salt. Regarding the beginning of intruder missions, according to the flight log of Ofw. Schmid he actually reported on the night of July 19./20. an operation over England in a Do 17 Z with 1./ZG1 markings.
