St Kap III./KG 51

Can anyone please tell me who commanded 7./KG 51 between Hptm Walter Heilmann (+12 Sep 42) and Oblt Hans Gutzmer (who took command Jun 43). Also 8./KG 51 prior to Oblt Hermann Bräck who was killed 11 Jan 43

Re: St Kap III./KG 51

Hello Chris,

in the KG 51 chronicle of Wolfgang Dierich (table of Staffelkapitäne 8./KG 51) Hptm Gerd Korthals (KIA 3 Nov 1942) is listed as predecessor of Oblt Hermann Bräck.
In the table of Staffelkapitäne 7./KG 51 Hptm Gutzmer is listed as successor of Hptm Heilmann.

Regards
Leo

Re: St Kap III./KG 51

Thanks but Korthals was killed in an accident with V./KG 40 having left 8./KG 51 in June 1942 so it is possible that Bräck took over from him while Gutzman apparently did not arrive until June 1943

Re: St Kap III./KG 51

Hello Chris

I don't know of any "Staffelkapitän" between Heilmann and Gutzmer so I don't think there was one. After Heilmann's death, Werner Poppenburg led the 7th squadron as a deputy squadron leader until the end of September 1942. At the end of September, the 7th squadron gave up their planes and went to Sarabus. Reinhard Gramberg, Poppenburg's Bordfunker, told me that the crews of 7th squadron were only back in action at the beginning of February. They flew as part of the III.Gruppe without an independent 7th squadron.
Greetings, Rene

Re: St Kap III./KG 51

Hello

Whether my answer is historically correct, I cannot say. In Poppenburg's album I found a photo from September 1942 in Tazinskaya. There you can see Oblt. Bräck with Capt. Heilmann. Poppenburg writes: Oblt.Bräck, squadron commander 8th squadron, missing January 11, 1943. He must have just taken over the squadron from Hptm.Korthals. Korthals can still be seen in a photo from September 1942.
Greetings, Rene

Re: St Kap III./KG 51

Thanks again. Korthals became Kdr on V./KG 40 1 Jul 42 on its formation so the dates are a little interesting but seem to match!

Re: St Kap III./KG 51

Hello
According to the III./KG51 war diary, Captain Gerhard Korthals flew a mission to Stalingrad on 25.8.1942.
