2/NAGr. 4
I found this claim by Obfw. Gustav Weippert 2./NAGr. 4 on the 12 Jun 1944 for a U-2 (5) at 08:55 at PlQu. 15694 at 08:55. This is deep behind the Soviet frontline at Belarus Front 2. The fact that he received the Knights Cross seems to indicate that he was very good at reconnaissance, since his score only reached 5. My question is did this unit fly Fw 190s during this time.
The 4 VA has a strange report on this day of a 4 VA liaison aircraft U-2 being shot down. In the report of the pilot Starshiy Leytenant Kazak had dropped off a Kapt. Zhiganov the head of chemical service of 62 ShAP 233 ShAD at Monastyrshchina and then flew south. He stated that 10 km south at Grivy that 2 Fw 190 attacked his U-2. He was finally brought down at 2 km north of Grivy and his U-2 burned. He sustained light bruises as his injuries. The problem that I see is the time 08:55 (Berlin) versus 10:48 (Moscow). The location is just about right for the PlQu. that is given. According to Kracker, Weippert only flew Fw 189 and Bf 109s. |

Re: 2/NAGr. 4
Nikose,
See https://www.luftwaffedata.co.uk/index.php/2./NAGr._4 I can only see mention of Bf 109s. Also see Michael Holm's "Flugzeugbestand und Bewegungsmeldungen 2./Nahaufklärungsgruppe 4" http://www.ww2.dk/oob/bestand/aufkl/b2nagr4.html

Re: 2/NAGr. 4
If the problem only a type of german aircraft, then it's not a problem at all. It is very spread case when Bf109s were named as Fw190s on soviet side. It was more "popular" fighter at the second part of war. And from the U-2 pilot's point of view there is not big difference.
The difference in time is more strange. Shift in time at that season should be 1 hour as i recall. But it could be simple mistake. |

Re: 2/NAGr. 4
Thank you everyone for the answers. On looking at more encounters by 4 VA as mentioned by ZhekaB, there was quite a “obsession” with observing or battles with Fw 190s. Outside of Stabsstaffel/JG 51 and III/JG 11 in June 1944 it appears everyone was equipped with Bf 109. I suspect that St. Lt. Kazak was thrown from his aircraft before it was strafed and burned, thus was unconscious for awhile. That would probably make up for the time difference. All the other circumstances fit nicely.
