Some crashes did occur in that way. On MACRs, the phrase to watch for is "last seen," but there is no guarantee that this exact wording will be there. I recall an incident that occurred in 1968. It was determined that a B-17 had made a successful belly landing but continued on to slide into a ravine, where it was found by hikers in that year.
