Loss of Oblt. Werner KÜHL 2./LG 1 JU 88A-4 L1+A night of 24./25. May 1943

Gentlemen,

any help is greatly appreciated!
The Junkers Ju 88A-4 "L1+A" flown by Oblt. Werner KÜHL of 2. /LG1 was lost during night operations on May 24/25th, 1943 to Bone harbour (now port of Annaba, Algeria). They probably were shot down by a nightfigher - all crew is MIA since then.
Crew: Uffz. Helmut SIEFKEN
Uffz. Wilhelm JÖRG
Gfr. Johann BURGER, *29.5.1923 at Traisen, Lower Austria
ANY further details are very welcome!
Thank you very much in advance.
Regards, K.

Kurt,

MAW v4 has one claim listed for a Ju 88 by Beaufighters that night - 600 Sqdn Flt. Sgt. Harrop/Sgt Redmond, Ju 88 damaged 20 miles N of Cap de Fer (this is west of Bone).

Unfortunately, nothing else of value mentioned in the entry for that date.

Andy, thanks for your reply. That's something. MAW v4 is what kind of source?

Hi Kurt,

Just to add to the above replies:

I checked Peter Taghon's "Die Geschichte Lehrgeschwaders 1, Band 2", and it provides a few details on the raid. A force of 32 Ju 88s of II. Fliegerkorps attacked Bone, without much success. Apparently, the Ju 88s from I./LG 1 transferred from Foggia to Decimomannu between 14:38 and 16:50. They then flew the raid from there starting at 20:50, and afterwards landed back at Foggia. Two crews from 2./LG 1 and one from 3./LG 1 were lost to nightfighters.

FYI, "MAW v4" is the 4th volume in the series "A History of the Mediterranean Air War 1940-1945" by Christopher Shores, et al.

In both of these sources, the Werke Nummer of Kühl's Ju 88-4 L1+AK is listed as 141277.
