Ju88 Wnr 882307

Dear all

I have the picture of a Ju88 plate plate with the following Werk Nr :

"882307"

It looks like that this Ju88 crashed near Ales in the south of France, near Nimes;

can someone help me and confirm the story of this Ju88 ?

Thanks

Gilles

Re: Ju88 Wnr 882307

Since no one has yet answered, I will give you what I have and it is not much. The only entry for W.Nr. 882307 is from Airwar for Yugoslavia, Greece & Crete/Shores et al, p.369. Identified as an A-5 operated by 5.LG 1 which was lost 100% on 24.5.41, location Heraklion. II./LG 1 was operating in the Mediterranean during May 1941, so that would fit for that reference. I do not have any details other than the pilot's name. Since that entry probably precludes a French crash site, I am thus not much help. I have previously gone through the Qm. loss list page by page, but it is always possible to have missed an entry. Since my reference is not a primary source, there is also a question there, but I believe Chris Shores work was pretty solid.

Best Regards,

ArtieBob

Re: Ju88 Wnr 882307

Thanks ArtieBob for this information.

Here is the picture of the plate.

Your message shed some lights, as it confirms that we do have a Ju88 but the operation background doesn't fit with the data I have : the South of France is far from Heraklion and I have clearly a crash dated end of war (1944 ) and your data mentions 1941, so there is a doubt ...
I shall keep on investigating elsewhere and keep you posted if I move on.

Have a nice day

Gilles.

2307 was in September/October 1942 in Villacoublay (Junkers repair facility) and I have two flights with the 2307, a workshop flight at Villacoublay on 14 Oct 42 and an acceptance flight at Nimes on 31 Dec 1942 with Hptm v Riesen (source: flight logbook Uffz Götz)

Is there more than one issue of the book?
On page 369 in mine only "L1+DN II./LG 1 flown by Fw Herbert Schelm failed to return" is stated
These early books about the Med Air War were unfortunately influenced by one co-author who believed
the German WNr were of no interest. They are thus remarkable for their lack of such details.
No idea from where your WNr 882307 comes from.

Checking Peter Taghon's LG 1 book vol 1 he states the correct WNR to be 3157 making Peter Ach's
observations far more interesting

Cheers
Stig
