Spitfire Roundel on Wing Panel

Hey guys,

From what I can see...this appears to be:

An Early (pre-1942) Type A Roundel that was then converted/overpainted to a later Type C (1945) maybe?

Colors suggest pre-1947...I just do not have the diameter at the moment.

My understanding that the lack of yellow ring could also denote mid to late-war, but on a light colored aircraft. Maybe a Seafire?

Thoughts on this?

TIA

Mike

Re: Spitfire Roundel on Wing Panel

It would depend whether the white is over the blue or vice versa

I suspect the white is over the blue, converting a thin white ring into a broad white one

Re: Spitfire Roundel on Wing Panel

Mike - Martin. It looks to me like a Type "C" (the thin white ring is visible) converted to the later Type "D", the white increased as you say. The large red centre is typical for "D" but here it's still the Dull Red rather than Bright; the "D" ratio is 1:2:3 ie. red 1 third total diameter, white 2 thirds. On the Type "C" the Red is 2-fifths of the Blue (AP.2656A).
The yuccy "green" could be FAA Dark Slate Grey (?).

For orientation purposes the original photo should be rotated 90 degrees to the right.
