Lester Lowry

The Guardian has a story on Lester Lowry today.

The story appears in a narrow window at the top of the page and I think you are still able to scroll down through the story in that window:

Re: Lester Lowry

Hi Rolland. Lowry was flying Carl Luksic's "Lucky Boy" 42-8516 HO-Z and had only joined Group that month. I wondered why the Memorial says " HDQS 28. Div" but he was previously in the National Guard ( Army serial 20312738) Infantry, enlisting 17 Feb. 41.
Regards
Nick

Re: Lester Lowry

Nick, I think the memorial plaque was done by the family. It is not one of the "official" headstones provided by the U.S. Leo's brother applied for the Pennsylvania Vetern's death benefit, but he was disallowed. On that application the brother mentioned the membership in the National Guard, so I think the family was "confused" as to Leo's official "status". When Leo's brother made the application (in 1950) both parents were dead.

Re: Lester Lowry

Leendert, interesting find re the morning report. Leo's status is changed from dy (duty) to killed in plane crash to dropped fr (from) from rolls.

Re: Lester Lowry

The excavation of Lester's plane will be shown tomorrow at 9PM on the "More4" channel, in the "Hidden Wonders" series.
