Re: Allied aircraft photos
Sorry Ed, completely missed the caption--"New Caledonia from Fiji"; so could be 67FS P-400s as they were delivered to Fiji in crates then sent to N. Caledonia where the 67FS and 65th Material Sqn. assembled and tested them at Tontouta. N. Caledonia was the distribution Centre for fighter aircraft in S. Pacific. Markings maybe left over from US. ?
Photo 4. Not actually taken at Rice as that was on the edge of the Mojave Desert in S. California, part of Camp Granite (see picture). More likely at Walterboro but retaining 339FG designator, they certainly used "S". Nick added some details. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desert...nter_-_map.png Last edited by Buckeye30; 30th January 2026 at 13:11. |

Re: Allied aircraft photos
POST 93.
B-29 "Shrewd Maneuver" 44-83905 (331BG) NW Field Guam, tail designator Diamond "L" (call sign Slicker 09). Looks to be at Harmon Field Guam, built by 25th. Seabees as an aircraft depot and maintainance centre. Their air echelon arrived Guam 23 June 45 so only flew 4 missions Aug.1--14th. against oil targets in Japan. Scrapped post-war. (one source says this is 44-83937 but this was Slicker 48 "Nosmo King" in Group inventory). Nick |

POST 95.
B-29 42-24912 (29BG N. Field Guam from Feb. 45) "Oily Boid"; name refers to her regular leaks. Believed also called "City of Michigan City" on right side as per 314th Wing practice which must be the one in Indiana. Survived war but in bad state; one source says abandoned on Iwo Jima. Tail marking Square "O", sometimes in yellow late war. Nick |

Re: Allied aircraft photos
POST 98.
Both are 793BS / 468BG, based Kharagpur in India until moved to W. Field Tinian in 1945. Both survived to be scrapped post-war. "Bengal Lancer" (reference to India) 42-24487; in India had 2 dark blue rudder stripes (sqn. colour) and blue star in comet both sides. On Tinian was Triangle "I" /32. "Wichita Witch" 42-24442 (built at Boeing-Wichita) markings as above but Tinian number probably 29. Most 468th B-29s had the "Billy Mitchell" group insignia on tails, his personal House Flag awarded to the Group to recognise their excellent record. 487 had crew chief's choice "Lula Belle" on nose.
