Re: Pe-8 No 42107
Lacking of German NJG claims on September 2, 1943 is irrelevant as this Pe-8 was lost in a friendly fire incident, downed by a Soviet 183 IAP Yak-7 pilot, Sgt. Ivan Alexandrovich Shelokov. Poor tail gunner, St.Sgt. P. G. Kostin kept firing red flares towards the attacking Soviet fighter, but his signal was not understood on time. The loss of the plane does not mean that the crew was lost, probably they bailed out over own territory and returned to their unit. I have a copy of this Soviet report, so I have no question about it. I really hate that attachments are no longer accepted on this website, but thank God, it still exists!
