Re: Photos 1-17

Me 262 is 500079, F1+DA, with Stab/KG 76 at Giebelstadt.

Is there a photo or a document verifying the unit code of this aircraft? Smith & Creek (vol. 4) attribute it to Stab KG(J) 54, which seems more likely to me since I've never seen any source for a 262 serving with KG 76.

P.S. any idea when the "Stormbirds" Werk Nummer database will be back up?

The destroyed airliner at Merville

http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?...m=150081995232

G-ADSZ Elysian - Destroyed at Merville - Research in the German archives found that Lufthansa showed interest in the engines of an Ensign (referred to as Armstrong) for fitting to their DC3s but no mention of FZV, or any other Ensign, being re-engined.

Nice to see it was destroyed

Better photos clearly show F1+DA on the front wheel cover. KG 76 had a couple Me 262's, along with their Ar 234's.

That Me 262

Hi Nick,

This particular aircraft is indeed from KG 76 as noted in a description attached to the photo from official US sources. Richard Lutz has a series of photos of this kite with the same information, and in one of these images the aircraft code is visible as Dan notes.

I would add that while at first glance one might think that this was a KG(J) 54 aircraft. At one time or another, staffeln of KG 51, KG(J) 6 and 54 painted the nose of their aircraft with the respective colour, sometimes along with a contrasting ring in black or white.

Yet here, the real key is the staffel colour applied to the leading edge of the jumo engine nacelle intakes. Only KG 76 did this, and in their case to their Ar 234s and their few Me 262s. I have yet to come across photos of a similar marking for aircraft from any of the Me 262-dominated units - KG 51, KG(J) 6, KG(J) 54, EJG 2, JG 7, NAG 13, NAG 6, etc.

Cheers,

David
