Re: Me262 claim for US a/c over Austria on 26th Nov 1944
Lt. Fritz R.G. Muller was vectored into the Salzburg area to intercept a Mosquito from San Servo that belonged to the 60th South African Squadron. Muller had a fast closure on the Mosquito and trouble getting sighted on it. He fired anyway and the Mosquito dove into the clouds. It was given to him as confirmed but the Mosquito crashed landed at it's home field.

Re: Me262 claim for US a/c over Austria on 26th Nov 1944
Hi,
Thank you for reply. Twin engined aircraft is a good start. I only can find NS623 that flew into a hill on the 27th. Have you details of serial number of the one you mention ? I was in hope of someone replying with info on a P38 shoot down. Was there any other Me262 combat in the area that may fir on the day in question ? Many thanks for reply. Alex |

Sorry, That's all the info I have. You might see if there's some one who has the 4 volumes of Me 262 by J Richard Smith which might have more of what your looking for.

Re: Me262 claim for US a/c over Austria on 26th Nov 1944
I found nothing about the 26th November in the 4 volumes by Smith/Creek.
However, the Me 262 Combat Diary gives the names of the pilots of the Mosquito as Lieutenant Stoffberg and Flight Officer Andrews, who managed to force land at Fano. There is a P-38 that was shot down by Major Sinner near Kitzbühl/Austria, about 60 km SW of Salzburg. That plane was piloted by Lieutenant Julius Thomas and was an escort out of 3 planes for an F-5 recce mission. Sinner took off and landed at Lechfeld. Maybe that is the plane yo are looking for. No further data are given in the book. Best wishes Robert |

Re: Me262 claim for US a/c over Austria on 26th Nov 1944
Hello Robert,
Many thanks for your reply. Yes that is the one. Thomas. The Mossie NS623 had a different crew than the ones you name. I wonder what the serial number of that one was ? The P38 pilot is reported to have died of his wounds, so must have survived the crash or bail out , but no details of if he became a POW. prior to his death. A KU Report on the crash may be a help. Thanks again Alex |

The P-38 pilot was Lt. Guy Thomas of the 1st FG,94 FS. He was injured and died of his wounds on December 4,1944. He was claimed by Hptm Sinner.

Re: Me262 claim for US a/c over Austria on 26th Nov 1944
Hi,
There was also a claim for a F-5 Lightning of 7 PRG ( serial 43-28619 ) flown by Lt Irving J. Rickey, who was shot down by Obfw. Hermann Buchner at 24,000 feet near Augsburg. The US aicraft crahsed near Spesshardt, 20 km S of Pforzheim. ( sources: Me 262 Combat Diary from Foreman and Harvey, pgs 97, 98 ). Hope this will help too...although this combat seems to have been a bit more to the NW than this one you are looking for... Sincerely yours Adriano Baumgartner ( Brazilian ) |
