Re: GC II/4 two losses on the 10.05.40

All informations i gave come from GC II/4's official archives. And it says they fought against Me 110s.
But i did not find any Luftwaffe's claim that could correspond.
Epinal is located at the SE of Metz, so perhaps Adriano is right with Wolfgang Lippert, with a Curtiss claimed at 13h43.

Sgt de la Chapelle was flying n°146 and had to land it at Epinal's airfield. This aircraft, damaged, was sent to Toulouse's AIA ("Atelier Industriel de l'Air") after this mission.

Re: GC II/4 two losses on the 10.05.40

Lippert probably shot down Cne Astier of GC I/8 who was killed in a Bloch.

No idea who Litjens claimed, but all sources agree that GC II/4 was in battle against bombers and Bf 110.

Re: GC II/4 two losses on the 10.05.40

Hi Laurent,

I think Lippert fought with GCI/8 (Cne Astier or Lt.Bouysse`s formation - it`s more probably opponent due to localization).
Litjens could fight with with GCII/7 [MS.406 No.59] or with GCII/4 (there are two claims made by II/JG53 one was not confirmed).
It`s a pity that we don`t have claims of Zestoerergruppen...
There is also a later (16.32) claim made by Lt. Gödecke from the I/JG54 but I have no idea about the combat, which could be placed in the vicinity of Vitry-le-Francois (I think it`s too deep and he made a mistake with the localization).
Another mystery is Ms.406 No.334 from the GCII/7 lost to Bf109 in the early morning (04-05.00)?

Regards

Robert

Re: GC II/4 two losses on the 10.05.40

Hi
I obtain new info by one friend with this post :
we have 2 Sergent de la Chapelle
One named Antoine (brevet N° 25179 du 17/07/36)
One named Albert (brevet N° 24309 du 5/7/34)
So, i'l in error, the first Antoine was the men from this battle with GC II/4
He was dead in 1983 ...
The second Albert was Killed in the P-47 from GC I/4
Best regards Dan

Re: GC II/4 two losses on the 10.05.40

Hi fellows!
Regarding BF 110 information on 10 May 1940: I looked around the only book I do have on the subject: ZERSTORER by John Vasco. It says that the vast majority of their missions was air-to-ground attack ( airfields ). The book talk mostly of ZG 1, ZG 76 and ZG 26 actions. It seems however that a machine from .3/ ZG 26 piloted by Fw. Hans Reinamn failed to return from unknown reasons from a combat mission around Rethel, SW of Charleville. ( Flak ? Fighters ? ). The bordfunker, Obgfr. Heinrich Howe became the first Zerstorerverband casualty on the Western Campaign. ( I guess you must know this fact, but I am putting it anyway ). From his researches, it seems that there were no particular combat between French Air Force fighters and BF 110, although he talks a lot about combats with the LVA Dutch Air Force ( specially Fairey Battles, Fiats CR 32 and Fokkers ). Hope to have helped in some way…Certainly quite a mistery those BF 110 records…
Friendly as ever

Re: GC II/4 two losses on the 10.05.40

Hi
in his book about 110 Loss wrote with Peter Taghon my friend Claude Archambault say:
This day many 110 was used in nederlands, but I./ZG 26 was on French north in the morning .
Bf 110 C U8+DL wk 3011 from 3./ZG26 was destroyed 100% am Letanne
(we have in the book a picture with 110 Belly landed)
After one aerial combat with 2 Curtiss GC I/5 circa 5h30, this 110 was in support for bombers.
The Bf 110 was shooting down by sergent-chef François Morel.
The Fw Hans Reimann make a belly landing, but Heinrich Röwe was killed by frenchs shoots (first KIA from Zestorers in Westfeldzug ...)
Reimann can return his unity after french defait (in 7. staffel)
Am 16.04.41 Reimann was MIA over the Balkans (Yugoslavia ...)
Best regards, Dan
