Can someone identify the emblem on the cowling on this Bf 109 F.
A reconnaissance unit - or what?
This Bf 109 F belonged to 2./JG 52. The emblem on the cowl is a hand holdig a Spitfire over a map of the English Channel. This a/c also sports the running boar emblem aft of the Balkenkreuz.

Thanks, that was actually my first "lizard brain reaction" but I didn't make it match with the "Blobs" in the shield, but when you mention the "Running Boar" it connects again. I saw that later emblem as some battle damage.....before you enlightened me!
Thanks a lot Primoz!

Re: Photos 3-12

I also found this little photo group yesterday while messing around on ebay.de

http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150100917260

I found it interesting because I remember reading in an old issue of Flypast, in a series of articles dealing with the making of the film "The Battle of Britain”, on which Galland was an advisor, that he stormed off set and refused to return unless the director etc. removed a scene or at least re-shot the scene which showed Luftwaffe men giving the Nazi salute to Goring, something which Galland claimed Luftwaffe men either never did do or would’nt do etc. This series shows that perhaps Galland was protecting his friends/services image a little too hard.

Ill have a check in a bit for the article to confirm this.

Nick

Ritchie:

As I understand it, until 1944, the Nazi salute as opposed to a "normal" salute, was optional. After the July 20, 1944 plot against Hitler, the Nazi salute was required.
