Its not surprising that the Airacobra suffered heavily over Tunisia, Its more surprising that it was more effective over the Eastern Front. ?? Of the claims made by Russian pilots, were many against Ground Attack/Bomber types, surely the 37mm Cannon would have been effective if hits were made. Whereas over Tunisia/SW Pacific, the far more agile bf109, FW190 & ZeroSen made mincemeat of their pilots. From memory, the units which defended Port Moresby achieved some success against Japanese bombers. |
