Hi Mike
It would seem that I have misinterpreted "hit object in flight" as being a barrage balloon, since the "object" hit by 41-9098 was a mountain! I now begin to wonder about the other incidents I have listed. Hopefully the answers will be forthcoming. Anyway, it's nice to hear from you, Mike, trust all is well. Cheers Brian |

From 'Losses of the 8th and 9th Air Forces' I can add the following;
3/10/42 B.17F 41-24451 (401 BS, 91 BG)-On flight from Gander, in poor weather struck Slieveanorro Mountain, near Cushendall, County Antrim. (8 Killed and 2 seriously injured) 29/10/42 B.24D 41-23712 (330 BS, 93 BG)-Crashed Porlock Bay during a 'routine flight'. No cause given. (11 Killed and 1 injured) 13/11/42 P.38G 42-2067 (8th AFSC)-Crashed Gresteel (2 miles SE of Eglinton), County Londonderry. (Pilot killed) 3/12/42 Oxford II R6179 (7th ADG)-Crashed into Fron Hen Mountain, west of Llanferres. (2 Seriously injured) No details on the other three aircraft I'm affraid. Regards, Steve |
